Nicknamed the “wind city of Africa”, Essaouira is one of the most reliable kitesurf spots on the continent. Here's what to know before you come.

Essaouira draws so many kitesurfers thanks to its trade winds: a north to north-easterly wind, steady, blowing almost every day through the good season. Add a large bay with a sandy bottom and you get an ideal playground, both for learning and for progressing.

When to come: the best season

The windiest season runs from April to September, peaking in June, July and August, when the wind regularly tops 20 knots. It often builds from late morning into the afternoon. In winter it's more irregular, but good days are still possible.

The spots

“In the bay you learn with space, a sandy bottom and a wind that comes back at the same time every day.”

Learning to kitesurf in Essaouira

To get started, plan several sessions: the first hours are spent on land and in shallow water learning to fly the kite safely, before your first runs on the board. Many students ride their first runs after a few days of lessons, depending on wind and consistency.

Kitesurf, surf and the rest

On windless days, Essaouira remains an excellent beginner surf spot, and the town has plenty to fill your days: medina, harbour, horse rides on the beach or quad biking in the dunes.
