A day-by-day plan to enjoy the medina, the dunes and the ocean without missing a thing.
Three days are enough to discover the best of Essaouira without rushing: the medina, the ocean, and a little adventure in the surroundings. Here is a balanced, day-by-day plan you can adapt to your own pace.
Day 1: the medina and the port
Spend your first day on the town itself. Essaouira's medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is best explored on foot with a guide who knows its history: Portuguese ramparts, blue-and-white alleys, thuya-wood marquetry workshops.
In the late morning, head down to the port, where the blue fishing boats share the quay with the seagulls — one of the most iconic photo spots in town. In the afternoon, take your time wandering the souks or settle on a terrace facing the ocean.

A 2.5-hour tour with a passionate guide, so you don't miss a thing.
Day 2: outdoors — horse, quad or surf
Day two is all about getting outside the ramparts. Three options, depending on what you feel like:
- Horse or camel ride on the beach, ideally at sunset for spectacular light.
- Quad ride through the surrounding dunes and thuya forests, easy from your very first try.
- Surf lesson if you want to enjoy Essaouira's famous waves, even as a complete beginner.
These activities usually last one to two hours, leaving time to combine two of them if you're feeling energetic — or simply to rest afterwards.
Day 3: argan cooperative and last-minute shopping
On your last day, a visit to an argan cooperative is both short (about 45 minutes) and memorable: you meet the women who press the oil by hand and discover a craft passed down through generations. It's also the chance to buy authentic argan oil directly, with no middleman.
If you have time left before leaving, enjoy one last stroll through the medina in search of a souvenir, or one last coffee facing the ocean.
Need to arrange your departure transfer?
To Marrakech, Agadir or anywhere else in Morocco.
Variation: if you're staying longer
With a few extra days, consider Sidi Kaouki (20 minutes south) for bigger waves, or a combined excursion bringing several activities together in one day. And if the Gnaoua Festival takes place during your stay, it's well worth a whole evening.
In short
Medina on day one, outdoors on day two, crafts and relaxation on day three: this rhythm covers the essentials of Essaouira without rushing. Each activity can be booked separately, depending on your availability once you're here.
