Travel time, transport options, indicative prices and tips to organise this essential journey.

The road between Marrakech and Essaouira is one of the most travelled in tourist Morocco — which makes sense, since they are two of the country's most visited destinations, about 2.5 hours apart. Here's what you need to know to plan it well.

In short: about 170 km, 2.5 to 3 hours by road, and several transport options depending on your budget and the comfort you want.

How long does the journey take?

Allow about 2.5 hours of direct driving between Marrakech and Essaouira in good traffic conditions. With a stop along the way (common, especially to admire the argan trees or take a break), plan for around 3 hours.

What are the transport options?

Private transfer

The most comfortable and flexible option: a driver picks you up at your hotel or riad at the time of your choice and drops you right at your destination. Ideal if you're travelling as a family, in a group, or with lots of luggage. You can stop along the way whenever you like.

Bus (CTM or Supratours)

The cheapest option. CTM and Supratours run several daily services between Marrakech and Essaouira, with decent comfort. You do, however, need to get to the bus station and stick to fixed timetables.

Car hire

For independent travellers who want to stop freely along the way. The road is generally straightforward, but driving in Morocco takes some getting used to (overtaking, animals on the road in rural areas).

Shared grand taxi

A local option, cheap but less comfortable: several passengers share the same vehicle, with no fixed schedule — it leaves when the taxi is full.

What's the indicative price?

The price of a private transfer depends on the vehicle, the number of passengers and the season. For an exact price, the easiest way is to ask for a quote directly — the answer usually arrives within an hour on WhatsApp, with no commitment.

The bus remains the cheapest option, but the least flexible in terms of timetables and comfort.

What time of day should you travel?

An early start from Marrakech gets you to Essaouira before the afternoon heat, leaving you a full afternoon to enjoy. If you're making the trip the other way to catch a flight from Marrakech, allow a comfortable margin, especially during busy periods such as the Gnaoua Festival in late June.

What you'll see along the way

The road crosses landscapes of argan trees typical of the region, and it's not unusual to spot goats perched in the branches — an iconic image of this part of Morocco. Several stopping points let you watch this sight or visit an argan oil cooperative on the way.
