A riad in the medina, an apartment near the beach or a house with a pool in Sidi Kaouki: the right choice depends on what you're coming for.

Essaouira is a small town, but the atmosphere changes a lot from one area to another. Here are the four main options, with their pros and cons, to help you pick the place that fits your trip.

1. The medina: full immersion

Staying in a riad in the medina means living at the town's pace: everything is on foot, and restaurants, the harbour and the ramparts are minutes away. The lanes are pedestrian, which is charming but means carrying your bags or getting help on arrival.

2. Near the beach: comfort

Along the bay, south of the medina, you'll find newer hotels and apartments with parking and direct beach access. Handy for surfers and families, 10–15 minutes' walk from the medina.

3. Diabat and the nearby countryside: peace

A few kilometres away, Diabat and its surroundings offer quiet guesthouses and villas, often with gardens. A car or taxi becomes necessary to reach town.

4. Sidi Kaouki: nature and ocean

25 minutes south, Sidi Kaouki is ideal for a longer stay centred on surf, beach and rest. Here you rent whole houses: small village houses, villas with pools, cabins among the argan trees or large estates for groups.

“Our advice: a few nights in the medina for the atmosphere, then a few days in Sidi Kaouki for the ocean.”
