About 3 hours by road, a UNESCO-listed medina and the ocean at the end: here is how to make the most of your day in Essaouira from Marrakech.
Essaouira is the most popular escape from Marrakech, and for good reason: in a few hours you swap the heat of the Red City for fresh Atlantic air, and busy souks for a white-and-blue medina where you can stroll without pressure. It works as a day trip, but it takes a little planning so you don't spend more time on the road than in town.
Distance and travel time
Allow about 190 km and 2h45 to 3 hours of driving between Marrakech and Essaouira, depending on traffic and stops. The road crosses the plains around Chichaoua, then the argan forests of the Haha region before reaching the coast.
| Option | Duration | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | about 2h45 | Families, groups, flexible times |
| Bus (Supratours, CTM) | 3h to 3h30 | Tight budgets, solo travellers |
| Rental car | about 2h45 | Independent travellers |
| Group tour | full day | Those who want everything arranged |
Bus, private transfer or car: which one?
The bus is the cheapest option, with several morning departures from Marrakech. Book ahead, especially in high season, and buy your return ticket as soon as you arrive: late-afternoon buses fill up fast.
A private transfer is the most comfortable: the driver picks you up at your riad at the time you choose, stops wherever you like on the way and brings you back in the evening. For a family or a group of 3–4, the price per person quickly gets close to an organised tour, with much more freedom.

Stops along the way
- Goats in the argan trees: a famous image of the region. Note that some stops are set up for photos and a tip is often expected.
- An argan cooperative: watch women crack the nuts by hand and buy oil directly from the producers.
- A roadside café for a mint tea break among the hills.
What to see in Essaouira in one day
With about 5 to 6 hours in town, here is a realistic plan, all on foot:
- The ramparts and the Skala de la Ville: bronze cannons and views over the ocean and the Mogador islands.
- The fishing port: blue boats, the fish auction and the Skala du Port, the most photographed viewpoint in town.
- Grilled fish lunch at the harbour stalls: pick your fish and it's grilled in front of you.
- The medina and its souks: thuya-wood craftsmen, jewellers and spices, far calmer than in Marrakech.
- Moulay Hassan square and the beach in late afternoon, before heading back.
Why not stay a night?
A day is enough for a first look, but Essaouira really reveals itself in the evening and early morning, once the day-trippers have left. One or two nights let you add a sunset horse ride, a surf lesson or a day in Sidi Kaouki, 25 minutes south.
Stay longer?

Practical tips
- Leave early (before 8am) to get at least 5 hours in town.
- Bring a light jacket all year: the Atlantic wind cools things down quickly, even in summer.
- Keep cash for the harbour, small craftsmen and tips.
- Be wary of improvised “free guides” in the medina, who often end up asking for money.
